How to Prepare for Your Upcoming Photoshoot

Getting ready for updated photos for your business? Whether you’ve booked your session or are still searching for the right photographer, standing in front of the camera can feel intimidating for most of us. But don’t worry—this guide will help make the experience fun, easy, and successful.

Your professional image sets you apart in a crowded market. Follow these steps to prepare for your shoot and ensure you look and feel amazing!

Step 1: Define Your Vision

Start by considering what message you want your photos to convey and who you’re aiming to attract.

• Identify Your Target Market: Who are your clients? What do they value?
• Create a Mood Board: Use Pinterest or save images that reflect the style and tone you want.
• Select a Photographer: Choose someone with the skill and experience to capture your vision.

Key Questions to Answer:

• How many locations do you need?
• How many images or outfit changes are required?
• What is your social media or marketing plan?

Step 2: Choose Locations

Your location sets the tone of your photos. Here are some ideas to consider:

• Studio or portable studio setup
• Staged or personal home
• Office spaces
• Cityscapes (streets, shops, landmarks)
• Neighbourhoods relevant to your market
• Coffee shops or rentable venues
• Natural settings

Pro Tip: Blurred backgrounds can showcase the area while keeping the focus on you.

Step 3: Plan Your Wardrobe

There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for what to wear, but these tips will help:

• Mini Sessions: Plan 1-2 outfits.
• Full Sessions: Prepare 3-4 professional or business-casual outfits.

Wardrobe Guidelines:

1. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable.
2. Stick to solid colours; avoid busy patterns that distract.
3. Dress to match your brand's tone. Coordinate with team members if applicable.
4. Keep jewelry minimal to avoid detracting from your face.
5. Wear appropriate footwear (even if it won’t be visible).
6. Consider the weather and practicality of your outfit choices.

Makeup & Grooming:

• Use natural-looking makeup that matches how you appear to clients.
• Artificial lashes can enhance your look but avoid overly thick styles unless they’re part of your brand.
• Men can use translucent powder to reduce shine.
• Tame flyaways with eyebrow gel.

Before the Shoot:

• Schedule haircuts 1-2 weeks ahead of time.
• Test new makeup, products, or styling to avoid last-minute surprises.

Step 4: Prepare the Days Before

What to Avoid:

• Overexposure to sun (red skin is difficult to edit).
• Unfamiliar spray tans.
• Last-minute hair colouring (to avoid stains near the hairline).
• Alcohol the night before.

What to Do:

• Stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.
• Finalize your wardrobe and try on outfits in advance.
• Practice a few poses or smiles in the mirror.

Step 5: Final Prep Checklist

The day before your session, make sure you:

• Iron and hang your outfits.
• Pack accessories, makeup, touch-up tools, and shoes.
• Identify your "good side" (often the side where your hair is parted).
• Review any specific goals or preferences with your photographer.

Step 6: Day of the Shoot

Relax—you’re ready! Trust your photographer to guide you through the process. Their goal is to make you look and feel incredible.

Tips for the Day:

• Arrive on time and prepared.
• Be yourself—authentic smiles and laughs shine through in photos.
